Whenever you decide to wash your car, cleaning the rims and tires is an essential task that must be done before cleaning the rest of the car. It is precisely on the tires and rims that most of the road dirt is deposited, so it is very important to clean the wheels to prevent dirt from scratching the bodywork during the washing process.
Then there are extraordinary situations that require thorough cleaning of rims and tires. Particularly, before seasonal tire changes or to remove ferrous debris tenaciously anchored to the wheels as a result of numerous braking.
Very important thing!!! Whether it is a routine or extraordinary cleaning of car rims and tires, the first thing to do is always to rinse the rim and tire, so as to remove coarse dirt and cool the surface you are going to work on. An extra tip: Always avoid working on hot surfaces, especially parts of the rim near the brake calipers, which get very hot even after only a few miles.
Routine cleaning of car rims and tires
Routine cleaning of wheels and tires, also called "maintenance," can be done whenever you wash your car, we recommend every 2 weeks on average. How to use the Mafra Kit for routine cleaning.
As mentioned earlier, the first step in routine cleaning of rims and tires is to rinse the rim and tire to remove coarse dirt and cool the surface.
On cold rim, spray Rim and Tire Cleaner, let the active foam work for about 1 minute. The active foam will dissolve all the dirt on the rim turning brown. Rinse the rim with water so that all the dirt is removed and then make a second spray of product. Leave it on for about 1 minute more and use the 24mm and 35mm Red Brushes to spread the product evenly over the entire rim, reaching all parts, even the most difficult ones. At the second rinse, the foam of the product will be white; this is proof of total removal of dirt.
Finally, dry both the rim and the tire thoroughly with the Heavy Work microfiber cloth. Our advice is to use 2 cloths, the first for drying the alloy rim and the second for drying the tire.
Extraordinary cleaning of car rims and tires
If after ordinary cleaning, dots or dark spots are still present on alloy wheels, then these are ferrous contaminations. Extraordinary cleaning of alloy wheels is precisely to remove anchored dirt residues that ordinary cleaning cannot remove.

Extraordinary cleaning of car wheels and tires requires an extra step: decontamination.
A specific product such as Fallout Iron Remover rapid car decontaminant is needed to remove iron contamination. Sprayed on the rim, it acts on the iron residue by chemically dissolving it. You will see the product change color to purplish, this is a sign that it is acting on the iron residue. At this point, use the soft-bristled brush to reach every part of the rim, even the most hidden parts. Let the product act for a few minutes and then rinse with plenty of water; then, dry the rim using a microfiber cloth such as Heavy Work.
If there is still contamination after applying Fallout auto ferrous decontaminant on the rim, repeat the operation until it is completely removed. The Red brush allows you to act even on particularly contaminated areas.
How to protect tires with Extreme Black
The cleaning operation of rims and tires, both ordinary and extraordinary, ends with the finishing and protection of the tire: for this there is Extreme Black, Mafra's spray tire black. Taking care to always work on a clean and dry tire , we suggest you proceed as indicated below, depending on the effect you want to achieve:
- Mediolucent = apply gum black spray to Foam Pad and spread evenly;
- Glossy = spray one round of gum black spray directly onto clean, dry gum, leave on and finish with Foam Pad;
- Supergloss = spray the first round of spray tire black directly onto clean tire, allow to dry and then make the second round, finally finish and remove excess product with Foam Pad.
Remember, the cleaner the tire is, the more the tire black adheres to and protects it.
