How to restore teak boat with Woody
As we return from vacation, the super appreciated tutorials by Carlo Luongo on thecare and maintenance of boats and inflatable boats. This time we turn our attention to one of themost prized surfaces of boats: we discover with Carlo Luongo the repainting of boat teak with Woody.
If there is one surface that is indicative of a boat's care, it is the wood. Blond, shiny and elegant when well treated and gray, patchy and cracked when neglected. With the right techniques and products, it is not difficult to have teak surfaces in excellent condition, all season long. In this tutorial, Carlo Luongo explains restoring boat teak with Woody, the"2-in-1" product designed by Mafra for the maintenance and regeneration of boat teak parts.

Whole boat teak restoration: cleaning and a touch of protection
Teak is a surface renowned for both its aesthetic and its mechanical and physical characteristics, such as water repellency, resistance to salt spray and weathering, just to name a few. Let's find out with Carlo Luongo how to best use Woody, the Mafra product that in some ways can be considered "all-in-one": cleaning, bleaching and protection in one step!
Used pure, Woody allows you to carry out operations of extraordinary cleaning: the formulation with surfactants high-penetrating power deeply cleanses the wood by lifting and disrupting dirt, removing black stains, impurities and all traces of mold or algae, restoring teak to its original condition without the need to laminate or sand the surface.
Diluted according to Mafra's suggested patterns, Woody is suitable for periodic washing of wood under normal conditions. The waterproofing wax contained in the formulation seals open grain and maintains the wood's characteristics over time, bringing out its original beauty. Mafra's Woody, available in the 4.5l can or the 750ml bottle (with trigger included), thus creates a protective layer that prevents dirt from penetrating deep into the wood, thereby nourishing the surface and protecting it from the elements for about 10 days.
Note: The presence of the wax may make the surface slippery during rinsing. Simply wait for the first drying to resolve the problem.

Woody: how to best use it for teak boat restoration!
Wet the surface
Thoroughly wet the wood surface to help open the pores and grain where dirt accumulates and, at the same time, cool the surface. It is good to keep in mind that wood tends to accumulate heat and release it slowly. Therefore, at this stage, it is important to use plenty of water to cool the entire thickness of the planks.
Apply the product
Apply Woody directly to the siding.
Performing a mechanical action
Using a brush with soft bristles, brush in the direction transverse to the grain. This will prevent further digging into the fiber, preventing dirt from accumulating. A foam will form, varying in color from beige to brown, depending on how much dirt is in the wood.
Rinse
Rinse the surface thoroughly to remove excess product.
Repeat the operation
Repeat the operation until the color of the foam turns white, indicative of a thorough cleaning. In Carlo Luongo's test, with a plank that had been abandoned outside for 5 years, 3 coats were needed!
Allow to dry
Let it dry and appreciate the restoration of the teak.
Thanks to Woody, the teak surface of the boat will be constantly treated and protected! The wax it contains makes it perfect for diluting in water for weekly wood washing, thus saving on oil application that could darken it and raise the surface temperature. It will then suffice to apply the oil at the end of the season in anticipation of winter.
Carlo Luongo's closing remarks:
Woody is a concentrated product. Therefore, it is advisable to do a few trials with different dilutions to find the one best suited to the individual surface. In this way, you save product and effort without overstressing the wood.
On the back of the package, in addition to directions for use, warning sheets and certificates of biodegradability, ideal dilution amounts based on the intensity of soiling are given.
All products to restore teak are acid-based. Woody is too, although in a lower dose. Because of this, aesthetically it will not give you the clearest wood but, at the same time, it will reduce the risk of melting coments.

Some important recommendations!
By now we know, Carlo Luongo 's constant recommendation is to avoid working during the hottest hours: that way, you'll have time to scrub without letting the water evaporate. And always keep a water hose with you to rinse off in case the wood gets too dry.
Carlo's advice is to also thoroughly wet the areas surrounding the treated wood (fiberglass, rubber, steel, etc.); this will prevent the removed dirt that settles on these surfaces from becoming inconvenient to clean up. Otherwise, you will simply use one of the Mafra products tested on the specific surfaces.
And if at the end of the restoration treatment the teak will look too light or you notice little change in aesthetic performance, it is most likely an indication of oil deficiency. Keep following us, we'll talk about just that in the next tutorial!
