New life to the boat: how to apply teak oil
How to apply teak oil: in the new video tutorial dedicated to boat cleaning and care, Carlo Luongo takes us through the correct procedure for reviving and protecting the teak of any boat. In this case, supporting Carlo in the "field test" is Teky, Mafra's teak oil!
We anticipated this in thelast article by Carlo Luongo dedicated to boat cleaning and care.: in the new video tutorial we discover how to apply teak oil correctly. A procedure that allows us to revive and protect a fundamental element of our boat, which helps to increase its value ... this of course only if it is well treated and uniform!
Teky is the new oil based on natural and urethane blends designed by Mafra to restore shine to teak, but more importantly provide it with the amount of oil that allows the fiber to withstand the elements. Not only an aesthetic factor but also a protective one! Let's find out the correct procedure and Carlo Luongo 's tips on how best to apply teak oil!
What are you waiting for?
Teak boat surfaces: care first
Teak is afine wood, the best type of wood you could want for your boat. Taking the best care of it to keep it in the best condition at all times, especially if you use the right products, is simple--and necessary!
With Carlo Luongo, we have already analyzed the correct techniques for restore the teak surfaces of our boat. But it may happen that, at the end of the restoration treatment, the teak looks too light or the change in aesthetic performance is not evident. This is most likely an indication of oil deficiency.
Watch Carlo Luongo's video on how to restore teak with Woody
As is shown in Carlo's video devoted to the restoration treatment with Woody, once dried, the wood has returned to its lighter, albeit uniform, coloring. This means that it has lost its natural oils, which allow the fiber to adapt to weather and temperature changes. In this case, the wooden parts of the boat are then more susceptible to cracking and expansion/shrinkage, with the risk of the fiber detaching from the chine--just as happened to Carlo's test platform during the cleaning phase!
How can this process of material deterioration be avoided? Simple, by periodically applying oil to our wood! That's why Teky, Mafra 'simpregnating oil that breathes new life into dry wood, was created.
Mafra 's Teky is ideal for both treating raw teak and restoring previously treated teak . The product guarantees high performance in terms of wood shine and protection, a long-lasting amber effect.
Let's find out with Carlo Luongo how best to apply teak oil!
How to apply teak oil: focus on the correct procedure
Shake the bottle
Shake the bottle of Teky, so that the components are evenly mixed;
Apply the product
Apply Teky with a brush or roller on the teak, following the direction of the grain;
Allow the product to act
Wait 5 to 10 minutes to promote absorption;
Remove excess product
Use a microfiber cloth to remove any excess product;
Enjoy the result:
Wait for it to dry completely to discover the final result and appreciate a finally restored and protected wood!
An important note: If applied in large quantities, the oil overcomes the wood's ability to absorb it, staying on the surface and leaving residue that could stick to the feet and thus be carried onto other surfaces.
Carlo Luongo's valuable closing remarks.
Cleanliness and waiting time first
Before applying any kind of oil, the wood must be cleaned with proper treatment. See the Woody's tutorial to find out exactly how to do it.
In the video Carlo also reminds us not to apply oil if the teak is not perfectly dry. For this reason, it is recommended towait 24 to 48 hours after the cleaning treatment. This way, you are sure to remove all moisture from the fiber. Conversely, there is a risk of finding patchy restored areas due to the fact that in some areas the oil has been absorbed and in others it has not.
Wood needs a full absorption time, which can be up to a week. For this reason, one should not be in a hurry to evaluate the work but wait for complete stabilization of the color.
The importance of preliminary evidence
Any kind of oil tends to darken the surface, consequently increasing the surface temperature. For this reason, Carlo recommends doing a preliminary test, in a hidden spot, to understand the final effect.
If you don't like the end result, you can opt for periodic use of Woody during the summer season (every week/10 days). The Mafra product contains within it protective waxes for the maintenance and regeneration of teak parts; you can then make an application with Teky before garaging in order to provide the fiber with the necessary elements to withstand temperature changes.
Warning: if by chance you have over-applied Teky, the wood will tend to "reject" it in subsequent washes. For this reason, do not worry if you see brownish-colored wash water flowing!
Some final recommendations
As always, in addition to providing us with valuable advice on how to apply teak oil, Carlo reminds us not to work during the hottest hours, to avoid side effects, and to be careful not to stain the fiberglass and surrounding areas with the oil. Should this happen, simply wipe it off immediately with a microfiber cloth since the oil, once dry, is difficult to remove.
