A long tradition
The Giro di Sicilia has been a prestigious race: the first edition was held in 1912, the last in 1958, and a re-enactment has been organized since 1979.
The roll of honor of the Tour of Sicily speed race includes prestigious names. The first winner was Englishman Cyril Snipe aboard a SCAT 25/35. In the 1910s Felice Nazzaro and Ernesto Ceirano also won, both with cars of their own construction. From the late 1940s Ferrari dominated with some of its finest models such as the 166 S, 340 MM, 857 S and 250 GT.
Bringing them to success were champions such as Clemente Biondetti, Gigi Villoresi, Peter Collins and Olivier Gendebien, a four-time winner at Le Mans. An exception to the victories of the Prancing Horse was Piero Taruffi who, in 1954, won in a Lancia D24.
