A glorious history
The history of the Tuscan Cup is interesting. It was first organized in 1949 to repay Tuscan fans who were disappointed that the Mille Miglia no longer passed through Florence.
The organizers chose a 600-kilometer route that proved very tough even for champions such as Biondetti and Marzotto. The winner was the young Venetian Ugo Bormioli at the wheel of an Ermini 1100 (a prototype built on a Fiat 1100 base) at an average speed of over 110 km/h. The race would then be organized until 1954, with routes of increasing length, eventually reaching an impressive 760 kilometers.
In 1950 181 cars were registered at the start and success went to Serafini-Salani in a 2-liter Ferrari. The following year saw four Prancing Horse cars occupy the first four places: the winner was Gianni Marzotto at an average speed of over 130 km/h.
In 1952 the race forced more than 90 of the 213 participating cars to retire, and victory went to Bruno Sterzi in a Ferrari 225 S. Instead, the 1953 edition saw Lancia Aurelia GT 2500s triumph, taking the top three places with Clemente Biondetti, Gino Valenzano and Roberto Piodi.
The Coppa Toscana was staged for the last time in 1954, recording the return to success of a Ferrari, Piero Scotti's 4500. After that, the event was replaced by another race, the Mugello Circuit of which a historical re-enactment is held today.
Today the 2024 Tuscany Cup is revived with the Re-enactment, which sees Mafra supporting the passion of the participants.
