A distant tradition
The history of the Perugina Cup, born exactly a century ago, is short, but very intense. In fact, the race was held for only four editions between 1924 and 1927. It was Giovanni Buitoni, at that time a young member of the family that owned the S.A. Perugina confectionery company, who wanted to organize it.
A very fast course was defined for the race, with a tower for direction and grandstands made from railroad cars. Free chocolates from the Perugia company were distributed to the public.

In 1924, the same track as the Perugia Motorcycle Circuit, 16.7 kilometers long, was used. The winner was Tuscan driver Emilio Materassi in a car equipped with an Itala chassis and an airplane engine from Hispano Suiza.
In 1925 another Tuscan driver, Gastone Brilli Peri, with a 140-hp Ballot imposed himself. In the next edition in 1926, the presence of a female driver, Baroness D'Avanzo, who dueled at length with Brilli Peri and Materassi in her Mercedes, stood out. In the end, however, it was still Materassi who triumphed at the wheel of an Itala.
The last edition also saw the great Tazio Nuvolari, who lined up in a Bugatti, enter the race in 1927. The "flying Mantuan" finished seventh, while success went for the third time to Emilio Materassi, an authentic specialist in this race. Due to the lack of support from national sports bodies, the race was then no longer organized, until its rebirth as a historical commemoration for classic cars.
